I’ve been working at the NCS Residence as a case aide for almost a year. I’m in social work school, and this is my first job working in human services.
“I’ve been working at NCS for about four years now. I get to interact a lot with the clients, and they’re cool to interact with.”
NCS Scholars is led by Mary Jacobs (nee Clark) previously the Senior Case Manager at Louis Nine House (LNH), NCS’s supportive residence for young adults. “I love working with young people who have experienced homelessness,” she shared. “I love helping them break down barriers and helping them reach their goals.”
Monique Phillips knows her way around Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter.
Before she started working for NCS three years ago, Na'eema Nadir performed outreach in NYC's subways, connecting people experiencing homelessness with meals, shelter, and other services as needed. That experience was helpful in her first role at NCS, providing information and referrals for guests at Upper East Side meal programs through our Community Human Services Information Referral Program (CHIRP).
After a few years of having to cancel in-person staff events, we were all so excited to spend the day together at Riverbank State Park.
Christmas is always an exciting time at NCS. Before the pandemic, our traditions included decorations, talent shows, and big holiday meals together. When the recent COVID surge forced us back to social distancing, NCS staff stepped up to ensure that our clients still had a merry holiday.
Congratulations to Monique Phillips on her new role as Program Director of the NCS Residence!
“I like working at NCS because everyone is dependent on me so much. I didn’t ever have this before. I feel the appreciation from everyone.”

In February, Pearl Chin joined NCS as the Director of Finance and Administration. We have all loved getting to know her (even if it’s mostly been virtual) and want you to meet Pearl, too.

NCS CEO Ann Shalof led her first Reddit AMA (ask me anything) yesterday! She took questions about homelessness in NYC and the work NCS is doing to help our homeless and formerly homeless neighbors.
What has made this past year doable is how supportive and understanding everyone at NCS has been – both management and the Louis Nine House staff. Sometimes I’ll be in meetings and also making sure my son is “at school,” and everyone understands.

“I was always worried about safety first,” Kenny shared. “I just wanted to do whatever I could to protect the clients and staff.”
“I want to encourage everyone to get vaccinated,” he shared. “Not only because it will keep you safe but so that we can reach herd immunity in New York City and can fully reopen services for our Chance for Change clients. This vaccine and reaching herd immunity, being able to reopen Chance for Change the way it was, it will allow us to realize all that Chance for Change can be. I will be able to finally get to work on all the big plans I had when I started here a year ago!”
Our dedicated staff packaged and passed out individually packed holiday meals so everyone could celebrate social distantly. They loved the food from Jacob Restaurant and Brisas Express!
