Patricia's Story

Throughout most of her life, Patricia struggled with mental illness, substance use—and eventually homelessness.

Counseling from Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter's Chance for Change out-patient treatment program didn't make the struggle go away. But this unique program, which serves individuals who are homeless and battling addiction, gave her tools to reduce the harm that drugs created. Patricia's progress made it possible for her to move out of the homeless shelter and into the NCS Residence, where permanent housing is combined with the supportive services that Patricia needs to thrive.

And Patricia was thriving. It wasn’t easy, but with support and effort, she was doing well. And then came a global pandemic, shutting down New York City—and leading Patricia to relapse. But this time, it was different. Read about her relapse and recovery, directly from Patricia.
