Neighbors Help Neighbors in a Heat Wave

Last week, New York City was gripped by Code Red heat warnings. The air felt heavy and still, the sidewalks radiated warmth, and shade was hard to come by. For many of us, relief could be found in air-conditioned apartments, offices, or coffee shops—but for many New Yorkers without access to shelter or cool space, the heat was inescapable.

That’s why, on one of the hottest days of the summer, NCS staff and volunteers came together in our Chance to Connect space on the Upper East Side to take action. The room buzzed with energy as volunteers formed assembly lines, working side by side to fill bags with essential items designed to keep our neighbors safer in extreme heat. In less than an hour, more than 300 Cooling Kits were packed and ready to go.

Each kit contained carefully chosen items to provide both comfort and protection: reusable water bottles to stay hydrated, portable fans to create a breeze in stifling air, instant cold packs for quick relief, sunscreen and lip balm to guard against the sun, hygiene essentials, Street Sheets with local resources, and information on how to find Cooling Centers across the city.

For Vanessa L., one of the many New Yorkers who received a Cooling Kit, the impact was immediate:

Vanessa’s words reflect the urgent need these kits address. Something as small as a handheld fan or a cold pack can make the difference between struggling through dangerous heat and finding real relief.

Drucilla Williams, NCS staff member leading the Cooling Kit distribution effort, described the moment the kits began reaching clients, “It warmed my heart in a way I can’t describe,” she shared.

The success of this effort was only possible because of our community. Every person who donated, volunteered, or helped spread the word played a role in keeping hundreds of our neighbors safer this summer. We are deeply grateful for your time, energy, and generosity.
