From Scholar to Graduate–Join Us in Congratulating Nellie!

When Nellie joined the NCS Scholars program in October 2022—a program that combines housing and supportive services for CUNY students facing homelessness—she was among the first to step into this new opportunity, full of hope, determination, and a vision for a better future.

Less than three years later, that vision has become a remarkable reality.

In spring 2023, Nellie earned her associate's degree in liberal arts. By October 2024, she had taken a major step forward by moving into her very own apartment. And just this spring, Nellie graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn.

Nellie’s story is more than a personal triumph; it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when individuals are given the support, stability, and encouragement they need to pursue their goals. Her success reflects the heart of what NCS Scholars is all about: empowering young adults with lived experience of homelessness to thrive academically, personally, and professionally. Through stable housing and comprehensive support services like mental health support, individualized case management, academic resources like tutors, community building, and access to a food pantry, we provide the foundation students need to succeed—and to build the futures they deserve.

We couldn’t be prouder of Nellie. And we’re deeply grateful to the community of supporters who make stories like hers possible every day.
