“When I graduated college, I knew I wanted to work for a non-profit so that I could help people who didn’t have the resources to help themselves and specifically I wanted to help homeless people. When I was growing up, my grandparents- they have a pretty large house in Norfolk- they would have people stay in their back apartment for free, and the people who stayed would help out with mowing the lawn or painting the house. It was just usually for a few days, and when I went to visit I would just occasionally see them. I realized that it didn’t change my environment at all and that there was something striking about that- that giving someone a roof over their head, it won’t change your day to day but it will change theirs completely. Working for NCS and helping people suffering from homelessness, it was a population I was comfortable with and focusing on housing seemed like the most impactful way to help right now.”
