FAQs and Facts

Every night, tens of thousands of New Yorkers experience homelessness. At Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter (NCS), we believe that everyone deserves not just a roof over their head, but a place to call home. This page answers common questions and provides key facts about homelessness, Housing First, supportive housing, and the resources available to help our neighbors in need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes homelessness? Homelessness is caused by a complex mix of structural and individual factors. These include a lack of affordable housing, unemployment or underemployment, mental health challenges, substance use, domestic violence, systemic racism, and more. In NYC, the high cost of living and a shortage of supportive housing exacerbate the problem.

What is "Housing First"? Housing First is an evidence-based approach that prioritizes providing permanent housing to people experiencing homelessness—without preconditions like sobriety or employment. Once housed, individuals are better able to address other challenges and achieve long-term stability.

What is supportive housing? Supportive housing combines affordable housing with on-site services such as case management, mental health care, employment support, and life skills training. It’s designed for people who face significant barriers to housing, such as serious mental illness or chronic homelessness. How many people experience homelessness in NYC? As of early 2025, more than 88,000 people are in the New York City shelter system each night. Thousands more sleep in cars, on subways, or on the street. Families with children make up a large portion of the homeless population.

Who is most affected by homelessness? Homelessness disproportionately affects Black and Latino New Yorkers. Youth aging out of foster care, LGBTQ+ youth, veterans, and people with disabilities are also at greater risk. Many people experiencing homelessness are employed but unable to afford rent.

How does NCS help? NCS provides supportive housing and wraparound services that help individuals move from homelessness to stability. We work with each person to develop a personalized plan for success, offering not just a place to live, but a community of care. Learn more about NCS programs.
