As New York City heats up, many of our neighbors face the blazing sun with no place to go and no way to cool down. For people experiencing homelessness, extreme heat can be more than uncomfortable—it can be deadly. 

Heat is the deadliest weather-related event in the U.S. 

And in NYC, 14% of heat-related deaths over the past five years were among people experiencing homelessness. In fact, those without stable housing are 10 to 100 times more likely to die from extreme heat than the general population. 

The Crisis is Real 

Access to air conditioning, shade, and water—things most of us take for granted—are out of reach for thousands of our unhoused neighbors. Third spaces like libraries or community centers, where someone might seek relief, are limited and often inaccessible during nights and weekends. 

As the heat rises, so must our response. 

Our Solution: Care That Builds Community 

This summer, NCS is rallying the community to raise $10,000 and distribute over 300 Cooling Kits to vulnerable New Yorkers facing extreme heat.

These items don’t just cool people down—they show them they’re seen, cared for, and not alone.
