Louis Nine House’s Outstanding Tenant: Tyler Cruell

Last month, The Supportive Housing Network of New York named Louis Nine House (LNH) resident Tyler Cruell the Young Adult Outstanding Tenant of the Year and celebrated him at their virtual gala.

After aging out of foster care at age 18, Tyler moved to LNH in the Bronx. Determined to graduate from high school, Tyler left the Bronx at 5:00 am every day to commute to the Brooklyn high school where he earned his diploma.

Initially, Tyler stayed isolated and didn’t interact much with his neighbors or the staff. “I was at school in the morning and sleeping for the rest of the day. It was rough to be on my own, so I only left my apartment when I needed to.” But the LNH staff never gave up on him. “They always came to check up on me because they knew something was wrong.”

Their persistence paid off! “It took a great deal of time, encouragement, trust, and support to get him involved with our services” said Mary Clark, Senior Case Manager. “Now he engages with staff regularly and participates in groups and activities with other residents.”

Tyler soon connected with the Options vocational and education program housed at LNH. After meeting Tyler and learning about his interests, the Options staff helped him apply for a job at Harlem Children’s Zone. He interviewed and was offered a position as a program aide for the summer camp, which extended into the fall for their after-school program. He continued this role until the program was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in March and plans to return when the program re-opens this month.

While Tyler is grateful to be recognized as Outstanding Tenant of the Year, this is just the beginning for him. Tyler wants to go to college to enhance his career opportunities. He thought about studying electrical engineering—but, since working for Harlem Children’s Zone, he is also considering a career in education. “Working with kids is fun. I always have a good time, and I also know that I’m helping them.

Whatever Tyler’s next steps, the staff at Louis Nine House and Options will continue to help him set goals and provide the support he needs to reach them.
