The Volunteer Director works closely with over 800 individuals annually from schools, community groups, religious organizations and corporations who give their time and talents to help NCS. Short- and long-term projects and one-time opportunities are available at locations on the Upper East Side and in the Bronx. Shifts vary to match volunteers' schedules and interests. Seeking Laptop Donations
NCS will be offering weekly laptop lab sessions for vocational clients starting this June. Donations of new and/or used laptops (in working condition) are needed for our clients. If you would like to donate, contact Prema Menon, volunteerjobs@ncsinc.org.
Organize a drive at your office, apartment building or school. NCS is always in need of:
- Donations of new or gently used books, CDs and DVDs
- Laptop computers
- Metrocards
- Gift cards
Share your time and talent at one of NCS's permanent or transitional
residences:
- Donate and serve dinner to a group of 25 residents on Wednesday or Thursday evenings (dates are flexible).
- Sign up for a Culinary Assistant shift, helping to prepare a pre-planned meal. Dates are flexible on Tuesdays between 4:30 and 7:00 pm.
- Offer a Mock Interview Workshop with four or five friends or colleagues to assist residents preparing to re-enter the workforce.
- Bake cookies, cakes or your favorite dessert and share it with residents during the Saturday High Tea program. Flexible dates, Saturdays, 12-2:00 pm.
- Organize four or five friends, family or co-workers to lead a recreational activity (bingo, karaoke, trip to the movies, amateur concert or a comedy show) for residents.
Bronx Academy of Letters students pitch in to help make dinner at the NCS Residence.Help out at the NCS Administrative Office:
- Assist with clerical tasks, data entry and mailings.
- Work on special projects.
- Sign up as a Volunteer Driver, helping to transport donations and supplies.
- Be involved with planning and executing special events.
Make a difference from a distance — become a Virtual Volunteer:
- Work from home, the library, or anywhere on your laptop.
- Search job openings for vocational clients or conduct research and online assignments as needed.

Internships and Community Service
Students are welcome to complete their internship or community service requirements with NCS. Mercy College, Hunter College School of Social Work, and Fordham University are just a few of the colleges we have worked with in the past.

DRIVERS — Volunteers with muscle and a vehicle to assist with loading and transporting donations from various parts of the city to 211 East 81st Street, NYC OR 1323 Louis Nine Blvd, Bronx.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: On an as-needed basis for no more than 2 hours when donations are received.
RESIDENCE AMBASSADOR — Enhance the residents' experience by obtaining donations (food; new clothing; hygiene items; Metrocards; and tickets to entertainment venues and events); OR, obtain donations of new/gently used CD's, DVD's, video games, software, college text and coffee table books for sale by Emporium Online, our on-the-job training program at Louis Nine House, our new residence in the Bronx.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Flexible hours at 211 East 81st Street, NYC
or 1323 Louis Nine Blvd, Bronx.
SHELTER AMBASSADOR — Our new Shelter at 921 Madison Avenue which is a 10 bed shelter providing respite to the homeless is in need of prepared meals, gently worn men’s clothing, new socks and underwear. The Shelter is open 7 days a week from 6pm to 7am.
ACCOUNTING FILE CLERK — Assist with administrative duties in the Accounting/Finance department such as organizing invoices, creating and retrieving files, faxing, copying, and maintaining binders/folders. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail needed.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available once or twice a week, for two to three hours at 157 East 86th Street, NYC.
VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT — Assist Director of Volunteer Services with general administrative duties such as filing, organizing files, and contacting volunteers to determine interest and availability.

ART WORKSHOP LEADER — Conduct informal group art sessions for clients to express themselves in a creative fashion by suggesting and overseeing artistic activities in an informal group setting, obtaining needed art supplies, and encouraging tenant participation.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available once a week, for a 2 hour art group at 211 East 81st Street, NYC
MAINTENANCE AIDE — Provide assistance with maintenance and repair projects at 211 East 81st Street, NYC
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Preferably on a weekly basis but bi-weekly acceptable from Monday through Friday between 8am to 4 pm
MONTHLY BIRTHDAY PLANNER — Coordinate a monthly party to celebrate tenants' birthdays by preparing schedules, publicizing through flyers/announcements, obtaining refreshments/decorations, arranging party space and planned entertainment, attending party and assisting with clean up.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Must be available once a month to plan and attend parties, for a minimum of six months at 211 East 81st Street, NYC OR 1323 Louis Nine Blvd, Bronx
MEAL ASSISTANT — Helps with the cooking and serving of the evening meal for 25-30 residents, cleaning the kitchen, washing the dishes, and properly wrapping and storing leftover food.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM; Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday at 211 East 81st Street, NYC
MEAL PREPARER — Create a menu with Recreational Coordinator, bring the necessary ingredients; cook and serve a meal for 25-30 residents, assist in kitchen clean-up, and properly wrap and store leftover food. This activity would be perfect for a group of friends!
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM; Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday; may be one time or on an on-going basis at 211 East 81st Street, NYC
RESIDENT ESCORT — Accompany residents to their off-site treatment appointments after receiving clear instructions from the case manager on the location
and nature of the visit.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available on an as-needed basis at least once a week, or commit to specific shift each week at 211 East 81st Street, NYC
CLERICAL AIDE — provide additional support to the front desk and clerical office such as greeting visitors, answering the phone, researching outside agencies for referrals/information, and performing light clerical duties i.e. copying, faxing, filing, data entry and typing.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available to work at least one 2-4 hour shift; Monday – Friday, 9am to 4pm at 211 East 81st Street, NYC
RESIDENCE FRIENDLY VISITOR — Engage residents through simple conversation, taking a walk, playing chess/board games, or other recreational activities.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available once a week, for two to three hours at 211 East 81st Street, NYC OR 1323 Louis Nine Blvd, Bronx.
VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION COUNSELOR INTERN — Candidates pursuing a Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling/related field or with a Bachelor's Degree and significant work experience can apply for Internship to learn how to provide rehabilitation services to tenants of a supportive housing program who wish to pursue vocational and/or educational goals. The intern gets training on conducting intake assessments, working with clients to develop Individualized Action Plans (IAP), develops skills to provide individual and group counseling services, refers clients to appropriate vocational training, educational programs and employment opportunities.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: 2 to 4 hours a week over a 3 month period at 211 East 81st Street, NYC.
COMPUTER INSTRUCTOR — Teach clients computer skills such as instruction on typing, MS Windows & Office suite applications, and other intermediate to advanced computer skills.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Available at 211 East 81st Street, NYC for at least 9 hours per week preferably Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30 – 1:30pm. Weekend hours available (Saturdays & Sundays, 10-4pm). Candidates who can commit at least 2 hours every weekend will be considered.
Able to commit a minimum of 3 months.
JOB DEVELOPER — Assist participants to achieve their vocational goals by facilitating placements to employers and internship hosts.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: 4 hours a week over a 3 month period at 1323 Louis Nine Blvd, Bronx.
ROOF GARDEN VOLUNTEER — Create opportunities to engage and share experiences related to gardening with the residents by organizing the selection of items for planting, assisting with garden cultivation, provide education on the importance of food and its impact on their health and the environment. This could be a great activity for a group!
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: 3-4 hours per day for two to three days at 1323 Louis Nine Blvd, Bronx. As the garden takes shape and the residents became vested and take responsibility for its maintenance, the number of volunteer hours required would diminish.
DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT — Assist Development and Communications department with events, print materials and web-based communications.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: Flexible hours but must be able to commit a minimum of four hours per week.
